The Long and Short of It
I have talked about my love for the maxi skirt this winter. When I discussed it, I deemed it far too impractical in a climate of rain, sleet and snow. Arriving to work with half the street attached to your skirt and drenched in rainwater is not tres chic. But let's be honest, when has practicality got anything to do with fashion? Perhaps I was trying to persuade myself out of it, knowing that only having a few quid in the bank would not accomodate any unnecessary expenditure. Back then, I had hoped the maxi was a passing fad, a trend that I could lust after but be comforted in the knowledge that it wouldn't catch on.
Silly, silly me.
More and more gorgeous maxi skirts are being added to Topshop, Asos et al and it's incredibly hard to ignore them when they promise to come in candy colours, soft chiffon, pleated, tight, printed, jersey - every option you could possibly want all at a reasonable price. There's also the promise that if you find a maxi skirt not to your liking, shear off half of it and wear it to knee length. Or shear off most of it and wear it as a mini. Win win.
I'm 5"1 and a half. The half is very important don't you know. I feel Vogue may be talking about me. But if I listened to what a magazine told me to do, I'd be rocking the minimalist trend AND print, wearing maxi AND mini, wearing white AND flouro colours.
So fuck 'em, and fuck my bank account. I'll do what I want. This summer, in fact, tomorrow, I'm wearing a maxi, arriving to work with the street's rubbish and stinking of rainwater. I won't wear heels with my maxi, I'm going to find the lowest shoes I own and rock them that way. And when I can't afford to feed myself for the next week, I know I'll only have myself and my utter shite willpower to blame.

Christmas Wish List
One of the only redeeming aspects of Christmas is the gift-giving. Even though my purse strings are tight this year I always feel excited when I give my Secret Santa a present, or when the parents love what I bought them. Despite having to fight through the crowds of people, skip lunch to save the pennies and take advantage of every offer going in the shops, presents are fun. Strangely enough, I also love wrapping them. Another plus.
Although I don't love the Christmas season, I do love lists. There will be a fair amount of lists in the coming weeks as December is the time of list making and consequently I am in my heaven. This Christmas wish list is half for the blogs' purposes and half for my own. Mother dearest keeps asking me what I want under the tree and I can never remember, when I do I'm half way to work or it's two in the morning. Some of the items on the list are genuine wants, others (give a guess!) are pure fantasy.
1 - CORALista, Benefit; 2 - Topshop Kimono; 3 - Topshop shirt; 4 - Pamela Love; 5 - Downton Abbey DVD; 6- Topshop tunic; 7 - Oasis Watch; 8 - Brian Atwood; 9 - David Mitchell, The Thousand Autums of Jacob de Zoet; 10 - Beyond Retro Maxi; 11 - ASOS Waterfall Maxi; 12 - Beyond Retro Dress; 13 - American Apparel Office; 14 - Beyond Retro Dress; 15 - Alexander McQueen boots

Suit Up
It's hardly a new trend, designers have been toting it for decades and it's now a staple of the workforce. There is something I love about seeing a women in a suit, it's subversive, sexy and somehow demure. Thankfully the suit has been a hit all over the red carpet this week, with Leighton Meester, Jessica Alba and Olivia Wilde all attempting the look. It can be a bit hit and miss - I think Leighton would have done better without the tie and a skinner leg, Olivia could have done with a cropped leg and a better hairstyle and I reckon the only instance where the suit has been done perfectly recently was Rachel Bilson in Philip Lim, although that was quite a while ago - but it can be done in a multitude of different ways. With pussybow blouses, leather shorts or mix-matched peices there is no reason why the suit has to stay in the office. I have quite a few blouses and wear them tucked into skinny jeans or high waisted skirts on my "casual" days and blazers are the perfect way to cover up a pretty dress. Of course it's ideal in the office with straight leg trousers or a fitted pencil skirt and mid-length heel.
Do any of you wear suits to work, or plan on incorporating it into your every day look?
In other news, the lovely Laura from theblogofobsessivecoolness has kindly bestowed me a stylish blogger award. She has a wonderful blog which is great to read, which you don't find often. I seriously recommend you check her out!

Time to Wrap Up
(fashiongonerogue)
I bought a coat, years ago from French Connection. It was long, black and made me look like Neo from the Matrix. The Matrix films were out at the time (yes, it was a long time ago) and this look wasn't a bad thing. Then I realised, being a generous 5"1, I cannot own a big, black, oversized coat that ends mid-calf.
So I moved on to leather jackets. Leather jackets seem to be a lot easier for me to buy, I have three. But they weren't a coat. I had to wear scarves, gloves, cardigans, maybe a jumper under the leather jacket. Not practical.
And then last year, spurred on by Alexa Chung's duffel coat, I bought a beautiful pink duffel from Topshop. Ending just below my butt with a generous hood, I relished in the perfect coat. Until I realised when I'm wearing red, pink, orange or anything bright, a beautiful pink duffel coat is not a beautiful pink duffel coat. It's a beacon of pink, bright pink that renders most of my wardrobe useless.
So, I have an issue with coats. I can try them on in shops, lust after them on the internet, but can I actually walk up to a cashier and hand over my card - no. I marvel after girls who have a coat for every day of the week, for every occasion. I want a military inspired coat, a grown up Stella McCartney coat, a cape, a trench. I want, badly. But will I buy? No.
I have issues.

Pretty In Pink
(weheartit/tfs/fashiongonerogue/unknown)
Sometimes I get frustrated by the lack of ingenuity the average pedestrians have when dressing for winter. When I have a lack of inspiration, I turn to a host of cosy jumpers for an easy outfit, but none of them are black are grey. Instead they are cobalt blue, blood red or pastel pink. Why must people insist on dressing for winter as if the world is coming to an end; I understand the dark, cold weather does make it feel as if we'll never feel the warmth of sunlight on our face ever again but there's no need to dress for it's funeral!
I love these pictures because they all give a different yet equally great idea of how to dress in winter. Aqua coloured nails, thigh high grey socks paired with red lips, pink gloss, a thick pink jumper or a pleated dress. Now there's no excuse for black!

On the Maxi
It’s one of life’s big questions, on par with grappling with the existence of God and the understanding of evil. How does one look stylish in winter, without strapping on as many clothes as possible that results in an effortless hobo-Arctic climber chic?
Suffice to say, I have not found the answer to this life altering query. When I wake in the morning, to thick blackness, my duvet wrapped around my body like a caterpillar in a cocoon, the wind whistling through the bare branches, I have no desire to pull on those open toed wedges, shave my legs to go bare as Americans do and trust that only my coat will protect me from the blistering English weather.
I admire anyone who does not revert to a pair of jeans, jumper and boots, wrapped in scarves, hats, gloves and maybe, if it’s that cold, tights under jeans.
It is with envy that I flick through the glossy pages of magazines, to see A-listers navigating the winter with long skirts and maxi dresses. This is the silhouette that I crave, and while it seems simple enough, I cannot bring myself to don the ideal.
For starters, the impracticality of such an outfit convinces me otherwise – who wants to arrive to work with the bottom of your maxi drenched in rain water and mud? I have epic fantasies of dawdling to work, kicking scattered autumn leaves with the toe of my Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem boot, twirling in the street as the wind picks up and fallen leaves circle me, all the while as my maxi skirt fans out, Disney princess like.
In reality, if I was to kick the leaves with the toes of my Broke Graduate (re: unemployed) for New Look shoes I would most likely cut myself with shards of broken beer bottles – such is the glamour down my ends.
Secondly, there is no allure involved in rushing in a full length, or even mid-length skirt. The idea of running to catch the train, knees bow-legged like a penguin as you attempt to navigate stairs in a long skirt, is enough to put you in jeans for life. And yes, while celebrities seem to manage fine, do recall that unlike you or me, they have drivers to get them from point A to B and will spend a total of five minutes in the biting cold each day.
The only way my dreams of living a maxi-skirted reality is through hiring a chauffeur, a personal red carpet, umbrella holder and a street cleaner to help me navigate the perilous and fashion hating streets of winter in London. In terms of the Big Question, this stylish wannabee is resigned to her jeans, wool socks and knitted jumper.

"Yes, and her petticoat; I hope you saw her petticoat, six inches deep in mud, I am absolutely certain; and the gown which had been let down to hide it, not doing its office."
"Your picture may be very exact, Louisa," said Bingley; "but this was all lost upon me. I thought Miss Elizabeth Bennet looked remarkably well when she came into the room this morning. Her dirty petticoat quite escaped my notice."

Kimono
I haven't done this yet, but I've put together a potential outfit. I've fallen in love with the gorgeous kimono from Topshop and really wish my budget could stretch that bit further to add this to my wardrobe. This look has also been partially inspired by the stylish and beautiful Taylor Tomasi, as I absolutely adore her gym shorts.
I have a little request to ask my American readers - I'm heading to Los Angeles next week for a fortnight. Admittedly it is for a wedding so the majority of my time shall be spent trying to remember all the names of an extensive Asian family, but I am hoping to get some sightseeing and shopping done. So, what do you recommend? Any great (cheap) shops I should visit, vintage or not?
Thanks for your help!

Fill in the Blank
Evening my lovelies, I know I've been M.I.A for a week which is terrible as there is truly no excuse. Biggest news I have is that I went to Cardiff for a weekend to visit my friend at uni and managed to sample the nightlife while I was there. What I've learnt from that experience is that there should be an age limit to body-con dresses. Yikes
Speaking of clothing dilemmas, I have a slight, no actually, huge problem. I've been on the search for a top to go with the below skirt but to no avail, nothing I pick seems to fit quite right with the skirt. I'm on a slight deadline here, so if you lovely readers could help a poor gal out, what would you pick to wear with this skirt?
